Being Aware is something you're
constantly doing. It's about Being Aware of your surroundings, your
choices, your body, your feelings, and your safety. Over time, Being
Aware can help you to be a healthier and happier person.
There are lots of things you can do to Be Aware:
- Wear your seatbelt and helmet
- Always say no to drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes
- Be Aware of peer pressure: if you're not comfortable with something, talk to your parents about it
- Ask your parents where the smoke detectors are located in your home and if they're working
- Never share personal information with anyone on the internet. If someone asks you for personal information, tell your parents immediately
- Wear sunscreen when you're out in the sun, and reapply it every couple of hours
- If a stranger invites you into their car or home, always say no
- Make sure a lifeguard is present when you're swimming
- Make an emergency contact list with your parents and post it on the refrigerator
When you're Eating Smart, Be Aware of what you're putting into your body. Remember, too much of anything isn't good for you. Learn about different types of foods and drinks and how to read food labels. Knowledge is powerful!
We encourage you to Be Active for 60 minutes everyday. When you're Being Active, it's also important to Be Aware of potential dangers like overdoing it, dehydration, and safety. Being aware of how to use your body and tricks to avoid getting hurt are important for staying active in the future. These are a few tips:
- Drink plenty of water
- Wear sneakers when you're being active. If you're playing a sport, ask your coach or parents if you need a special type of sneaker.
- If you're riding a bike, skating, or playing contact sports, make sure you wear your helmet.
- Warm-up your muscles by going for a walk or jogging for a few minutes and stretching (slow, steady stretches)
