Ever wondered why people sleep? You probably know what it feels like when you don't get enough sleep. Sleepy at school, kinda grouchy, and tired. Not very fun. So, what's the scoop on sleep.

Sleep helps your body to recover after all that stuff you do everyday. It's when you form memories and get reenergized. When you're asleep, body grows and fights off stress - it also your helps you to think positive.

When you sleep 10-11 hours a night, you'll be healthier, concentrate and learn better, and start your day off feeling refreshed and good about yourself.

But, what happens when you don't sleep enough? You feel sleepy and tired and get irritated easily. You can't concentrate or learn as well, and you're performance (school, sports, video games, etc) goes down. You're also more likely to have accidents.

There are a bunch of things you can do to sleep well.

  • Use your bed for sleeping only: don't use your bed for homework, playing videogames, or watching TV
  • Have a routine: try to go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday.Chill out for 20-30 minutes before bed: try reading a little, take a warm bath, prepare your room for sleeping (undo your bed, pull down the shades, and turn off the lights)
  • Be Active everyday: physical activity is a great way to help you to sleep well. Try not to be too active close to bedtime- it can keep you awake! After school or early in the evening are better options.
  • Eat Smart - when you eat smart, your body gets the nutrients it needs to grow and be healthy. It also helps you to sleep better. Don't eat too close to bedtime, though. Avoid foods and drinks that contain caffeine, like soda and chocolate. Caffeine can keep you awake and affect your sleep.
  • Try to lose the TV - having a TV in your bedroom can cause you to sleep less. We know what happens when you don't get enough zzz’s!
  • If  you feel like you're not sleeping well, talk to your parents and doctor
